Since the ancient times, markets have had trade shows, and in many third world countries, those same markets still exist. In America, trade shows are often held at state fairs or convention centers, and they are a bit more sophisticated than a common flea market.
 
Using a trade show effectively involves skill and expertise. You have to know how to be a good salesperson, but you also have to be interesting and engaging enough to make others talk to you.
 
If you’re not good with people or can’t make small talk, then you’ll need to find someone who is, so he or she can man your trade show booth. If you handle them well, trade shows can actually be a viable source of income and can give you a much wider customer base. The more you work to improve your trade show presentation and skills, the better off you will be.

The harder you work on your trade show display, the more customers it will attract. Table covers and tabletop displays will also improve your booth’s appearance and lend credibility to your business. The prettier your display is, the more easily it will lure others in. 

How to Engage Others

If you know how to talk to people and be interested in them, you can easily improve your sales.

  • Introduce yourself politely
  • Ask how the trade show has gone, and what they’ve liked the most
  • Question them about something moderately personal and related to your services

 
A good trade shows salesperson acts interested in others and tries to engage potential customers on a slightly deeper level. You can say hello, casually mention your name, and ask how the trade show has been. If you’ve been around, you can both talk about how much you like other trade show booths. That gives you a connection.
 
After you’ve established that connection, ask them something related to their activities that relates to your product or services. If you are marketing cleaning supplies, then ask how easy it is to clean their house and what their frustrations might be. Anything you can do to pick their brains a bit will make them feel important and will help with your sale. Also, you can make notes for ways to improve your products or services in the future. Informal surveys really can help. Trade shows can exponentially increase your business if you know how to talk to others well.

How to Keep Them Hooked

Once you get others interested, you’ll have to keep them interested and thinking about your product

While you might engage a potential customer at trade shows, he or she might turn out to not want to purchase your product or services immediately. You’ll have to keep that in your head, and you’ll have to find ways to keep them thinking about what you have to offer Giving them pens or notepads with your company’s name on them is an easy way to hook them. Also, giving handouts about your product that they can look over when they get home will help. Offering testimonies from satisfied customers will also help.


Trade shows can be very effective for luring customers in. It’s a relaxed, non-threatening environment, and you have plenty of time to develop a relationship with the client. If you have the time to dedicate to them, trade shows will pay off.
